I have some more experimental kind of designs too that were created in the same style as the composite portraits. They're not representative of my best work. I'm taking a video class right now as well but the videos are all conceptual and weird and uninteresting. It's just that my drawings weren't that great and my 2d design stuff was, well, squares. I've taken a 2D design class where all we did was paint squares. If there's a stroke, I created it myself. No tutorial following, templates, stock assets. TLDR it's not that your work isn't good enough, it's just not what they are looking for.Įverything that I've created here is totally from scratch. Here's my site just to show some credentials. If you just want to be a badass illustrator with a certain style, then keep doing what you're doing, it's looking really good! Plenty of commercial work available in that field too. You've proven that you are good with illustration, now go explore some new territory (I found the composite photos the most interesting part of the portfolio and would like to see more of that stuff. It may be good to show a bit of your process - like research, sketches, and why you chose certain colors, fonts, line-weights, etc. One the thing about digital work is that it's hard to tell exactly how much of it is your own work or how much of it is derived from some template, stock assets, tutorials, etc. He was good with type, he made movies, and of course awesome chairs. Charles Eames was just good at solving problems. He uses everything around him to inform / create his work. Just look at Sagmeister's portfolio (who is a living god). They are looking for highly conceptual and diverse work.Įven though you might be into illustration, the best designers will use whatever style and medium is right for the job. They want people who don't care about medium as much and just want people who have a good eye for solving problems. What RISD is looking for are just talented 'general' designers. That's not to say that you don't have talent, it just isn't what they are looking for. She definitely sounded a bit harsh with the review, but the people recruiting for RISD are usually looking for something pretty specific and it's easy for them to tell in a few seconds if you have it or not. It just seems like this woman didn't know what she was talking about.įor what it's worth, my father graduated from RISD and I have over a decade of professional design experience and can probably shed some insight into this situation.Īs you know it's an extremely difficult school to get in to. I literally had to explain what product design was to her, she didn't even know that designing for phones and mobile was a thing. She basically told me that I wouldn't be able to get into colleges with this work because it doesn't include drawings or any work using traditional mediums.ĭoes anyone know if that's true? She seemed like she was one of those people who was heavily rooted in traditional art and didn't seem to understand design at all. I also had about 5 full size 11x17 posters of various gig posters I've created. These were all printed on nice paper and put in a book. I'll attach what I showed here here as well (I had to blur out work on 1 page because it's still under NDA, but you can still read the description). She didn't even really look at anything, just took quick glances at it all. The woman took less than 30 seconds to look over my pretty decent sized volume of work, which included descriptions for client projects, school projects, animations, etc. I prepared for a solid 2 weeks for this review and it finally happened today. RISD came to my community college and did a portfolio review. Join our Discord server Design Subreddits LIST Please report any posts which break these rules, to maintain the quality of the subreddit.
